Produce - Best value okay quality

Anonymous
We mostly eat from scratch and many in family are vegetarians.

So we go through a lot of produce and fruit every week.

I know Aldi and Lidl are cheap for packaged goods but have limited and lower quality produce many times

Trader Joe’s is okay but a little more expensive.

Whole Foods is quality but takes all the money. Moms is amazing but also tends to be pricey.

We tried Costco, but they didn’t carry cauliflower or broccoli heads or spinach. It seems hit or miss and takes forever to go there.

For Produce — where can I save money and get decent quality! Should I give Lidl another chance? Wegmans!

Try to use frozen a fair bit too. The quality is always consistent; you can buy family packs, etc. I'm sure everyone has opinions but we like:

Broccoli
Mixed vegetables
Peas (so easy to add to so many dishes)
Stir fry vegetables
Spinach

Hmart has beautiful produce.
Costco does have spinach and broccoli florets.
Sam’s has cauliflower.

Aldi has good prices if you don’t want to belong to a big box store.

Costco's cauliflower and broccoli florets do not hold up to roasting and their refrigerated vegetables are adequate but not good. Their non-refrigerated vegetables are generally great, and lower cost than WF. In general, I find Costco is the best answer for:

*frozen fruit (we go through a ton for smoothies)
*citrus (clementines, lime, mango, orange)
*pear, apple, plum (may need to hold to ripen)
*berries and cherries
*boxed/bagged greens (esp arugula)
*mushrooms
*potatoes (incl sweet potatoes)
*onions
*english cucumber, peppers, cherry tomatoes
*avocado
*some frozen veg (peas, broccoli, mixed, edamame)

I supplement at Whole Foods for:
*bananas
*broccoli
*cauliflower
*zucchini
*fresh herbs
*any other one-off things

I do enjoy some of their shelf stable produce.
But the problem is most of them seem to ripen all at once so I have like two dozen avocados! I will check out H Mart.

Put the broccoli and cauliflower things we need like a ton of and then also like spring mix which I think Costco is OK

Ripe avocados will keep in the refrigerator for quite a while

My local Harris Teeter has good produce. Many Safeway’s and Giants do as well.

Wegmans is consistently good to great quality but expensive. I feel like your best bet is to stock up based on sales - Fresh, Giant, and Safeway usually have a few vegetables priced pretty low every week (bell peppers for $1, broccoli $2/lb, etc.). I buy the 1 lb. clamshells of spinach at Costco and they generally last longer than a comparable bag from a regular store; they’re usually the cheapest for berries, too, but not always.

In addition to Hmart, you can also look at Lotte or Ranch 99. Both have big produce selections and are affordable.

Costco’s broccoli florets roast quite well. I also get green beans, avocados, peppers, spinach, cucumbers and sweet potatoes there. I don’t buy potatoes and onions because the huge bags just sprout before we get to using them.
Wegmans has reasonably priced cauliflower.

I love going to farmers markets but, at least by me, they are the most expensive of all.
