installing Cosco Scenera/etc. carseat RF with LATCH

Anonymous
We just switched from our infant carseat w/ the base to a convertible carseat, and I'm not sure if we're installing it correctly. Once installed, we can still easily tip it toward the car's seat back and it seems like it should not be able to do this. We had to use a rolled towel to make it level and the problem became even worse. Is it normal for the carseat to be able to rock front-to-back like this? We can tighten the latch enough so it doesn't move side to side.

You need less than 1 inch of play at the seat bite side to side. front to back it will have some give (that is how it works RF). There are some carseats that tether RF (like the Britax) that will have less play front to back. It is perfectly fine for the scenera to rock back and forth some when you push the top of the carseat. You should not push it so hard that you undo the install though. And, yes, I did have to use a rolled up towel for the RF install. Is this an everyday seat? I'm only asking b/c there are others out there that are much easier to install and that offer more padding etc... (I had a scenera for travel only. The everyday carseat was a Marathon).

Post your question on www.car-seat.org forums. You'll get all sorts of tips specific to your car. FWIW - we have a Scenera as a travel seat and I never get it installed a securely as my Britax seats at home. It's not my favorite seat...

OP Here, thanks. The reason we bought this one was because it had the best Collision Protection ratings on Consumer report, at least if we wanted a carseat under $200.

Please, go to car-seat.org or www.babybargains.com (carseat forum). Consumer reports is not the best place to look for carseat safety/ease of use advice. Please go and post and ask a tech. There are many many other carseats out there far better than the scenera for an everyday seat. And, there are deals to be had online all the time, so you can find a better seat in the price range you want to pay. FWIW, the scenera is a beast to install RF and has a continuous harness (it loops around), whereas something like a Britax has a harness where each harness strap is connected separately to the shell and is much easier to tighten, loosen, deal with in general.

For the same reason I attach the tether when RF. I think the manual doesn't suggest it but I do it.

Sceneras are not supposed to be tethered when RF. Britax and Sunshine Kids right now are the only carseats that do that. The tether on all other carseats is for FF only. If you RF tether a scenera you change the way it was designed to react in a crash.

I have 2 brand new with out tags Evenflo Triumpph Advanced seats to sell for $60 each. We bought them on clearance at KMart for my son's preschool van but they were too big for 3 across. We took the tags off and installed them so they can't be returned. They are a great deal at $60, they retail for $140. They have an infinite adjust harness which means the harness doesn't have to be rethreded to adjust the height. RFing weight limit to 35lbs and FF to 50Lbs. Seats are in Alexandria but I work in Rockville. Email if you are intested vrclay at hotmail dot com
