Read person who had been arrested for hitting a police officer in NY was released and believe same or next day hit a woman walking in Times Square. Have looked but cannot find what time the assault happened. Asking as wondering if things are happening late at night? Had been planning visit to NY with children. Should we skip Times Square and shows or ok if go there in day? |
You need to relax. It’s NYC. Weird things happen. You have to be extra diligent and aware of your surroundings, obviously. Good time to talk to kids about street smarts. But absolutely don’t skip a Broadway show over this. Times Square is skippable because it’s just tourists gawking at the M&M store, but if you feel like being a tourist then go soak it in! We stayed in the Marriott marquis last time and there’s nothing like it. I prefer just about anywhere else in the city but the kids loved it and I’m glad we did it once. |
NP- My kids loved that hotel too! The Marriott elevators are just fun, and stunning. The diligent and aware thing...Sure, obviously, but people who get hurt are usually local. You can't do much about someone coming at you by surprise or be on alert absolutely every second. Not a fan of blame the victim talk which seems so prevalent on this board. |
Manhattan is one of the safest cities in the world. I wouldn't stress. |
+1 |
I live in NYC and my kids go all over the city, including my 12 and 15yos on their own. We generally avoid times square because it's a tourist nightmare but we go to the theater often, several times a month and have never had a problem.
Just keep your wits about you and don't go out alone late a night. The chance of a random attack happening is extremely small, especially in a crowded area with loads of other tourists. |
We were just in NYC this past weekend. It was wonderful. We saw a couple of shows and wandered all around Times Square, Central Park (definitely watch the sea lions during their morning feeding/training sessions!), Midtown, the Hi-Line, the Village, etc. No issues at all -- though I wouldn't recommend you take the kids to the Village at night. Lots of 20-somethings hanging around having a good old time -- which means some smoking, cursing, etc. Plus, all the comedy shows are over-21 anyway, I think. |
We went right before New Years, stayed closer to Central Park but also walked A LOT around TS, Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle, CP, 5th Avenue, etc.
Always felt safe with my 5 year-old son. We rode the subway, took a few cabs, but mostly walked everywhere. Bigger issue is crowds, so we practiced a lot sticking close to one another. We talked about safety on the subway and always waiting to cross the street when we had the walk signal. We live in Georgetown and, TBH, it's safer to walk in NYC. |
I think that Times Square is safe, but the fun part of New York is now Williamsburg. Maybe stay in Williamsburg and commute in for whatever excites you about Times Square. |
You were in NYC last weekend and thought it was wonderful? Wet snow on Saturday, cold rain on Sunday, massive wind gusts on Monday. It was literally the worst weather I cant remember. I didn’t leave my apartment. |
We dressed really warmly, and it didn't bother us at all. It only rained hard on Sunday afternoon, and we were watching a play at that time (and had umbrellas for the walk to the theater). Obviously, we would have preferred beautiful spring weather, but it's mid-February. |
I love New York but I usually avoid Times Square if I can. Too crowded. |
