Science Olympiad

Are there any middles schools schools registered to science Olympiad? My kid would love this but when I looked on line it looks like only private schools are signed up.

It’s a really great opportunity for kids who love science. I was wondering if there was a reason DCPS doesn’t seem to bother with it

My kids did Science Olympiad at their MCPS schools. It's a great program that takes a lot of adult support—both teachers and parent volunteers—to coach all 23 events. By high school, the kids could coach themselves, but the middle schoolers needed a lot of guidance and teaching.

Let me rephrase: One reason any school (or school system) might choose not to do Science Olympiad is that it requires a large time commitment of adults outside of class time. This may or may not be the reason DCPS "doesn’t seem to bother with it" while private schools do.

Let’s be real here. The majority of kids in DCPS middle schools in this town are not even on grade level in basic reading and math. Forget science.

Plus a ton of parent involvement which lower SES families are not capable of doing

My kids' MCPS schools never did science olympiad. You need parents that want to lead this.

BASIS does send kids to Science Olympiad (and I'm they sometimes win the regional competition!)
