NYT says West Point disbanded affinity orgs but what does that mean for K12 school districts

Anonymous
The military academy did this in response to the new administration's order regarding race-based programs. Could that mean other educational institutions could disband those also?

Could they? I guess so. Will they? It’s unlikely.

Why is this in the MCPS forum?

Not OP but this is relevant given Trump's directive from the Education department to schools, to eliminate DEI or they will lose funding. This could impact MCPS if they decide to take a stand.

This just applies to DoD schools. Everything from West Point all the way down to the on base elementary schools.

No, the latest order is to all school districts, not just DoD.
At risk of losing federal funding if they don’t drop DEI in the next two weeks. Curious to see how Maryland and mcps respond.

Yikes. I can see MCPS digging in

Trump actually has legal authority for DoD bullsht.

His arm doesn't reach as far into states rights.

Wait to see what Congress does about funding.

It means nothing. Federal funding is less than 4% of MCPS budget.

3.4% of $3 billion isn’t nothing, especially when there is already a budget deficit.

Doesn't MCPS get more for things like free and reduced lunch and for IEPs or does that 3.4% include those things too?
Anonymous
There are also headstart funds. Isn't that separate?

$112.8M total

I think that 3.4% includes all the program funds.

If they turn down federal funds they would have to either cut Headstart, Title I funding, and free lunches or find money somewhere else.

The easiest cut would be for capital improvement I guess because it wouldn't impact day to day teaching as much but it's going to be really hard to find that much money in cuts.

Or cut the DEI positions (per the order) and don’t lose all of those federally- funded programs.
