Please tell me if I am reading this Valentine's Day letter from the US Department of Education correctly:
https://www.ed.gov/media/document/dear-colleague-letter-sffa-v-harvard-109506.pdf Test-optional is over? Also, it says the universities have 14 days to comply. How will this affect the current admissions cycle? |
I don’t read it to say TO is over. |
"Relying on non-racial information as a proxy for race, and making decisions based on
that information, violates the law. That is true whether the proxies are used to grant preferences on an individual basis or a systematic one. It would, for instance, be unlawful for an educational institution to eliminate standardized testing to achieve a desired racial balance or to increase racial diversity." |
Well it says IF a college uses test option IN ORDER TO achieve racial balance. But there are a lot of reasons to go test optional that have nothing to do with racial balance. Some colleges simply don’t believe they are strong indicators of a student’s ability. |
If they’re TO they haven’t eliminated standardized testing. |
I’m surprised the letter didn’t capitalize white but did so Asian |
+1 Trump is outsmarting himself. |
Brilliant.TO is another proxy for this by the way and should also be banned. No one in USA cant take an SAT these days. Shame on anyone applying to school TO but the essays are the worst. |
I can see why the PP is opposed to essays. Clearly they didn't get ahead in life on the basis of sharp writing skills. |
Will they get rid of legacy admissions as a proxy for selecting wealthy white students? |
No That's how their grandkids go to college |
I'm willing to bet I've got quite a bit further than you. And I will make even more millions now that Trump has returned. How 'bout you? Racial essays are illegal now folks, welcome to America. |
Some LAC have been TO for many, many years and it is not to achieve a racial balance. I would imagine the administration would need to show that is the reason. In many (most?) cases, it is not. |
Asia is the name of a continent, so of course Asians should be capitalized. White and black are merely colors, so should not be capitalized. |
Well since the demographics attending college have changed significantly over the last 20 years, wouldn’t legacy benefit all races now? This isn’t the 1980s where legacy exclusively means wealthy Caucasian anymore. |
