Protecting myself against canceled flights

Anonymous
I do not do air travel a lot. However I have a scheduled trip on Friday. I am concerned with the amount of snow expected to fall on Thursday. I am assuming the flight will go on as scheduled but I’m less confident that I can make it to the airport if our streets aren’t plowed or I can’t make my plan for my pets work.

Can travel insurance help with something like this? Are airlines helpful at all? Any advice?

This is to leave out of IAD around 6am on Friday.

You may still be able to buy insurance, but if it is a weather-related flight cancellation I think they will rebook you on the next available flight and you're usually SOL. That happened to me on AA and I got my money back because they couldn't get me a seat until 48 hours later which was not going to work since that was after my return date lol. Maybe stay by the airport in a hotel the night before?

If your flight gets canceled, you can either choose to take next available flight or take a refund back to form of payment. There's really nothing you can do right now.

Sometime Tuesday or Wednesday, the airlines will put up a weather waiver so you can proactively change your flight to another day/time. Friday at 6am is marginal depending on final amount of snow and timing. I'd have more confidence traveling then than Thursday, but it's kinda a toss up. Planes and crews will be out of place.
