We have a young elementary son who has played rec basketball the last two winters. He is very tall and seems to have some natural ball handling and shooting skills. Not amazing, but solid. He has really enjoyed it and wondering what the options might be to continue learning and ideally playing some games in the spring.
There is an AAU organization near us that has a developmental team for younger kids. Is this crazy/only makes sense for kids who are true standouts at a young age? How selective are these type of programs? Ideally we would find something where he can keep learning while playing alongside kids who aren't brand new to basketball, where the coaching is age appropriate. |

NoVA94 development team for age 7U, and competitive teams for 8U+.

Regardless of age, I would put him in Nova94 if you are in VA. If he needs more development relative to other kids trying out, he can play on a B team.
Some kids will get cut at these tryouts (my daughter was one of them), but that is less likely for a very tall kid with some skills. And even if he gets cut, there is a life lesson in that. |
