Hi all, I have a 3 year old and a 7 year old. We used to have a fulltime nanny but both kids are in school fulltime now, and our nanny has moved on to another fulltime job. I'm having trouble finding childcare options for my 3 year old in August before school starts (after Labor day). Do you have any guidance on partime/fulltime childcare options for a 3 year old for the month of August! This is a busy time of year workwise, so we won't be able to use our vacation during this period. Would college students be a good option? Are there any forums through which I could reach preschool helpers/teachers who may be looking for opportunities during that month? Any recommendations welcomed. Thanks! |
Get recommendations for local daycares and see who has temporary spots. That’s what we did for our son one year. Didn’t even know it was a thing! |

Most colleges start fall semester in mid August, so if you need care past labor day, it's unlikely you'll find one.
I know many of the UC (California) schools start in late September, but I think they are one of the few exceptions. |
Big daycare centers may have openings for the month while current families go on hold status for vacations (this tends to be big centers). This is probably your best bet, especially if your 3 year old is potty trained.
College students will already be in school for most of this time. |
Preschool teachers are likely also unavailable starting mid August for beginning of the school year in service. Depending on what level of childcare you want, a homeschooled high schooler could be an option. My experience is that they're usually really fun and nurturing but not super professional (very much babysitter, not nanny). |
Pat is a Preschool teacher Close to American University. My kids love going to their apartment and going the pool and taking lots of art and language classes. Contact her at brascamp@hotmail.com |
I have often found nannies in between jobs. A common lull is August when families go on vacation and are about to return or start school, and then September after labor day. Downside, often it's not until July that can find them. |
