Winter storm watch and Wednesday flight

Anonymous
For the experienced travelers out there, what do you think my odds are of being able to fly out of DCA on Wednesday morning at 7am based on the current forecast? The airline (Delta) I booked doesn’t have options for later in the day on Wednesday.

Thanks for your thoughts!

They'll be flying. Question more is can you get there

Most of the snow comes overnight Tues/Wed. I wouldn't bet on flights leaving/arriving on time early on Wed AM. I'm also travelling (Tues) and I hate this uncertainty and DC's generally inept management of routine winter weather, but you should be realistic about the odds.

Really hard to say. It’s going to depend how much we actually get by then. DCA only has one long runway so as posters have said on other threads, they have to close it to plow it.

Not happening.

Have fun at the airport.

I have an American Airlines flight out of DCA at 2 pm tomorrow. AA is offering flight changes for no charge. It’s not just DC you have to worry about but where the flight and crews are arriving from.

Tuesday evening/Wednesday before noon will likely have cancellations. The forecast is complicated because of the freezing rain at the end which will potentially cause widespread power outage due to tree limbs falling. Although that is not impactful to the airport, it may be impactful to your commute to the airport.

+1 Got the text from AA right in the middle of the Super Bowl

The airport being open is only one factor of MANY that determine whether your flight will operate. Can the plane make it there? Is ther crew there or stranded somewhere? So many factors. No one knows.

Yes, indeed. Why can’t DC control the weather?

Also, DCA and IAD are regionally managed. DC only gets a few board appointments to MWAA.

Snow is supposed to end earlier than previously supposed. So perhaps they'll have time to clear the runways before your flight. But if you're coming from NoVa, your house may get 6 inches of snow. Can you get out?

OP here. Thanks for the comments, very helpful! Delta isn’t issuing any travel advisories for this week which is odd. I’m very torn on what to do because it will cost several hundred dollars to fly out more a day early without the travel advisory. Weather.com does anticipate the snow to end around 4am so maybe the flight will be ok? I have a 3+ layover so there’s a bit of wiggle room for a likely delay.

There will be advisories issued later today. Just wait.
