International driver's license question re: au pair

Anonymous
My au pair has been in the US for 10 months, and recently passed the written test in Maine (though she does not have her permit card/ID in hand). How long can a person on a visa drive in the US before they MUST have a drivers' license? If she passed the written in Maine, will she have to take the written in VA as well as the driving test?

it depends on the state and such a particular q u r better off asking DMV.
when I arrived in MD from my home country with an IDL I was allowed 60 days to drive n they gave me a MD DL valid for same kenght as my IDL. once it expired 10 mo later I had to test to get MD license.
when i moved from MD to VA all I needed was to show up at DMV with a few docs and got it exchanged for a VA DL valid for as long as my visa.

It may depend on where the AP is from. Our AP is from Germany. She didn't have to take any test to get a license in VA. She did need a SS card, though, so make sure your AP has gotten one. Your LCC should be able to give all of the rules. Ours did.
