First time going through this: DC met criteria for humanities & math magnets but did not "win" the first lottery for placement in either. Does MCPS do a formal "second round" lottery--such that students get notified again of their status? Or are later magnet placements made on more of a rolling basis--where you only hear something if it is good news? And does anyone have a sense of the timeline for all this? Thanks.
Not sure how exactly this works but my DC was placed in the pool and still in the pool in 7th grade.
The schools will determine if all spots are filled after the decision deadline. Then they will pull names again from the pool and make offers to fill the seats. I’d say probably March/April. There is a lot going on that has to settle, like making sure all kids get enrolled somewhere.
You will only get informed if you get a spot in subsequent lottery draws. If you don't get a spot, you remain on the waitlist, but aren't informed that you didn't get a spot.
DP. To be clear, it is central office, not schools, who run the lottery each time. |
Four years ago, our child was offered a spot at TPMS in late March, FWIW.
We were part of the second round lottery last year, which was held towards the end of Feb. I suppose they need time to sort truth all the first round responses and organize before the second round and subsequent rounds since each round has a response deadline.
They also need time to process all the appeals of people who were not included in the lottery pool. |
I heard they did the 2nd round yesterday? Is that true?
Offers may be made all through the summer.
