Shift from writing to typing in elementary

When does this typically happen? My kid’s 2nd grade teacher is transitioning to an app for informative writing assignments.

There is no true switch. It is whatever the school has in place and what the teacher prefers. I taught 3rd grade reading and I preferred students to do their rough drafts and edits with pencil and paper. Their final draft was typed on the computer.

This is what I do in 5th grade. The act of physically writing helps with memory and understanding and students are forced to slow down. I think most 3-5 teachers in my school use this approach.

Unfortunately, they just show kids how to write letters in kindergarten, and then there is never any handwriting instruction after that. Look at kids' handwriting. It is illegible.
