DCA Flights on Tuesday - Snow

Anonymous
Any guesses on whether flights on Tuesday afternoon will be cancelled? I have a 2 pm flight for work and I dread packing, boarding my dog, getting to the airport and then not being able to fly out.
Would 6 inches of snow, they’re predicting, impact DCA flights?

Probably have a much better prediction by Sunday. Capital Weather Gang said the models are really spread out right now in terms of predicted snow amounts

But 3 inches (which is the median amount they said in their post) wouldn't result in closure, probably. They can handle amounts like that pretty easily, and the ground is pretty warm right now

Yes. Look for when they start offfering waivers.
Can you get out early?

This time of year, for snow to really accumulate, rates have to be ~1”/hr. Otherwise, with marginal temps and a higher sun angle, lower rates won’t be too impactful.

I have a 5pm out of Dulles on Tuesday and my DH was supposed to be flying into DCA at 2pm. He moved to an very early AM flight to be sure that he could make it back before I leave. I would see if you can get on an earlier plane. I was also scheduled to travel on the evening of the early January snow storm and managed to change it last minute - it was such a relief not to have to sweat the uncertainty and deal with the hassle of delays.

New models are showing it’ll only be 1-3 inches and they continue to trend to a smaller event. I wouldn’t worry about it right now.

Keep an eye on the forecast 24 hours out. I do think 6 inches could delay airport operations (if we actually got that much) but it also depends how early the snow falls and how much time they have to clear the runway.

My flight is at 9am so hoping it will be ok.

Sometimes the predictions 6 hours out are totally off so plan for the worst hope for best.

The European model just showed 9 inches for DC. It may be out to lunch.

No, that’s not correct…. That’s what “weather apps” say. Not the longer range models. Models are coming to agreement on 2-7 in DC metro.

Our flight to DCA got canceled in Jan with 6 inches of snow.

I’d try for earlier in the day or to go out on Monday.

What are thoughts on flights on Wednesday? I'm scheduled out of DCA at 6:30am on Wednesday AM.
