Do HS magnets close opportunities due their specialization?

My kid is likely to accept his offer at wheaton’s magnet. Program aligns with his current interests and I see all the great benefits of being part of the program but does it also close opportunities? While he loves math and science, I can also see him loving debate club or Model UN and pursuing law or business one day. Would those opportunities be less likely? I can foresee pressure to go to engineering school for college.

OP again - pressure is not just specific to Wheaton but to any of these programs (except IB, perhaps) specializing in subjects/fields

Is high school. It's not possible to over specialize when you're a child

If you take Model UN class it will hurt your opportunity to study engineering. There are over 50 electives (and many many clubs) and a student only takes under 15.

I don't think you are going to have less of this because of the magnet, I think you will see less opportunities due to the demographics of the HS. Experiences in clubs like Model UN and Debate vary widely across MCPS highschools. What are you other options school-wise and which of these activities does he want to participate in? People can tell you which Highschools offer the best options.

No this is silly. Your child still still have plenty of room for electives and clubs. They will be aware of more opportunities in engineering due to bein in the program but that's a good thing because that's his interest.
You're also talking about graduate school. You're worrying about an 8th grader's graduate school opportunities?
Get a grip mom and send him to a school where he'll get to study the subjects he loves.
