| Before I embarrass myself to ask homeroom teacher, do MCPS allow ES kids to pass out goodie bags to all kids in the classroom for coming birthday? I remember no passing out birthday invites and no passing out cupcakes/pizza at MCPS. How about small goodie bags? |
| NO |
|
No. Our MCPS elementary school has banned birthday celebrations in the classroom. No cupcakes/cookies or other treats are allowed.
They used to give the kids a birthday pencil, but that has also been eliminated. |
I get the treats, but why aren't pencils allowed anymore? |
| This varies by school. I would ask your child's teacher what the school's policies are for birthdays. |
| No. Not only that, they don't allow birthday acknowledgements like they used to back in the day. I think some teachers will at the start of the month recognize all student birthdays for the month, but MCPS has really tightened the reigns when it comes to classroom celebrations. |
|
You can't because some people are too poor or too cheap and it is not equitable.
Instead, I would offer the teacher stationary and supplies for the class in lieu of the goody bags. |
| ITS NOT EQUITABLE TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS. Please think of how your actions make other children feel. Just stop. |
| Ours still let kids do birthdays if they want to. |
| NO!!! So disruptive to the class, and a hassle for the teacher |
| It depends on the school and teacher. |
This. |
| In my neighborhood a parent might bring a treat to the bus stop as an alternative. |
| It depends on the school. Ours allowed celebrations by month so the December birthday families would coordinate and bring in items. I don't think DC ever got a goody bag but there were other treats and trinkets given out. Usually it was just pizza and cookies and cupcakes though. Participating was optional but this is a school where every family participates basically. |
Donuts and muffins were another two that students brought in. DP. |
