Looking for a tutor for a child in 1st grade, what is the rate range for a tutor? This is in the Potomac, MD area.

I also posted this in the older kids/teens forum

Depending on the subject 30-50 an hour.

It can be a good way to make money but keep in mind that the hours are usually between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm because most kids come for tutoring after school. Also during midterms and finals, a lot of kids want extra sessions.

Some private schools do allow tutoring during lunch hours or study halls.

WOW, I was totally undercharging! I only charged $35/hour for language arts tutoring. This was about 2.5 years ago.

Lab School tutor in my home $100 per hour

If the subject is reading or math, Kumon is only $100-$120/month/subject. It's not a tutor. It's more practice and repetition but it has helped my DC tremendously and it’s what I can afford.

Chemistry: I charge $75 in Potomac area.

Do they come to your house? We paid a college student $35 per hour to come to our house. We paid a math teacher $20 per hour, but that was at his school and there was a 2nd kid in the tutoring session with DD, so the total came out to $40. In both cases, this is what the tutors asked and we didn't negotiate down.

If you go to any of the tutoring sites you will see a broad range - up to $70 per hour for a professional, less for college students. What people ask may or may not be related to how well they teach and how well they relate to your kid. The college student at $35 per hour was fabulous (on a really complicated high school subject I'm not comfortable identifying), in both his knowledge and infectious enthusiasm. So by all means shop around.
