Can OPM fire me without going through my management/supervisor? Just like with the fork, I open up an email telling me I’ve been fired?
Or would I be given a chance to resign voluntarily? I want to be able to come back and work for government in the future, and worry that being fired will screw up my record. |

Your agency has to be the one to fire you.
Your chance to resign voluntarily is fork. |
| You wouldn’t fired for cause. Under democratic leadership (whenever that will happen), I don’t see how it could be held against you. |

| You will likely be fired if you don’t fork, and probably soon. |
This, regardless of whether it's via OPM or your agency. If I were probationary I would roll the dice and take the fork. |

If OPM mass fires probationary employees, a Dem president will remove any impediments to rehiring them. At worst you won’t be able to obtain federal employment during the Musk administration.
Technically OPM cannot directly fire employees, but if they order agency heads to do so they will comply. |
| No one knows for sure op and I’m sorry. I will guess that some agencies disfavored by current admin may be directed to fire all their probationary employees. Others will be able to justify keeping some or most as long as they comply with RTO in some manner. |
| No one knows. I'm so sorry. |
| If you were a superstar, your agency will fight very very hard for you. If not, you will likely be fired. |
| I’m sorry this is happening to you. I applied for a Fed job at the end of 2023 and due to a slow process wasn’t interviewed until May 2024. I really wanted that job and was bummed not to get it and kept looking right through Election Day. Now I’m relieved that it didn’t work out because the stress is horrific. The feds are going to lose a lot talent. |
| It depends which agency you’re working for. Just wait. |
| The memo did say if you are probationary the agency can decide to keep you. |

OP here. Thank you all for replies. I have already decided to resign, since I cannot go in person 5x week (long list of reasons, doesn’t work for our family). My dilemma is to take the fork or just wait until told to come in (they are still looking for space) and resign then.
I am very valued dev and have great management, so I am certain the won’t screw me over. I don’t want to get termination on my record, although some of you are saying it won’t matter in the future. I have an excellent performance appraisal. |
Which memo? |
