What say you? If you have a $1 million+ townhouse close in are you doing a Trex or hardwood deck?

Try again.
What?

Trex, definitely. It looks better and continues to look better, literally for decades.

Trex is horrendous. It’s feels like cheap plastic and looks the same.

Yeah, Trex sucks. Use a natural wood that is weather resistant. Think cedar, white oak, mahogany.

Trex is the vinyl siding of decks. Of course it's low maintenance.

Trex. It's functional and durable and looks fine. Wood is inevitably a maintenance issue.

If it’s for your own use, you’ll be there a while, and you’ll be using the deck a lot, the cost might be worth it.

That said, if there’s an HOA, be sure to check if the deck material might need to accommodate the rules (ie, wood so all the homes’ deck stains match).

We've had both, and the Trex is very low-maintenance and looks great. The only real downside is it can get hot for bare feet in summer. (It can also be slippery per the article below, but we haven’t had that issue.)

It really helps to see them in person and have a sample as well.

Trex is much more like the Hardiboard of decks than vinyl siding. It is what we put in on our 1M+ close in town house and we love it. If you are going to wood, the only option in my mind is ipe.

I have Trex Transend and it has held well for more than ten years.
Call Pro-Built construction company they did a great job.

$1 million townhouse in this area is not high end.

I think Trex is hideous, but a lot of expensive homes in Mclean have decks made out of it anyway.

Those guys are $$$. Good but not worth it imo

I have an historic SFH in CCDC. Comps tell me it's worth $2.4 million.

I am sick and tired of replacing rotted wood flooring in my porches. So, the third time around, I chose a weathered gray Trex for the tongue-in-groove floorboards of the back porch. Shrug.

Trex is like "luxury vinyl plank". There’s nothing luxury about it. It’s the wood paneling of this time period.

I called multiple companies for estimates that didn’t show up.
What is funny is one company advertised heavily but didn’t want to come and give estimate .
That’s why I like Pro-Built they come give you estimate and do a professional job.
I have used them multiple times.
