HS Bus Route Questions

We were accepted to a Wheaton magnet and live in Takoma Park. The Magnet bus schedule doesn't list a route that comes anywhere near Takoma Park. However, bus route 3416 listed on the "Regular School" doc has a stop right by our house. As a magnet student, would our kid be able to ride this bus?

I can only find AM bus schedules. Are there PM buses for Wheaton? I'm certain I've seen these in the past when researching other schools, but can't seem to find them now. We're new to MCPS and are still trying to figure it all out.

Yes, they're able to ride that bus. Any student at Wheaton can.

The PM bus routes aren't always posted on school websites, but they do exist. You may have to ask the office.

Thanks!

We're in the same boat! I'm hoping some of this will be answered at the open house.

Anyone who lives within the other DCC schools catchment areas (Blair, Einstein, Northwood, Kennedy) can take one of the regular bus routes to Wheaton.

When our daughter was in the middle school magnet we were told any magnet kid could ride any MCPS bus.

To whom should you ask this question? Magnet middle school? Or elementary(bus stop) Or bus department? Bus driver?

Because of the DCC, there are not magnet specific buses among DCC schools. Magnet kids and kids who are not in their home school because they chose a DCC placement ride the same bus.

My magnet kid used to even ride a bus that went to a totally different neighborhood because it was the only way to get her to an afterschool practice.

I know there is a Wheaton bus which stops on Carroll Ave near the opening to Opal Daniels Park in Takoma Park, and magnet students ride it.

You don't need to ask, you can just show up at the bus stop of your choice and ride the bus.

Another voice here to say: in the DCC, lots of kids go to a school that’s not the closest one to their home. Some go to magnets, some go just because they chose that school in the choice process. That’s why there aren’t special magnet buses. They are the regular buses.

Lots of great info. Thanks! Hopefully our kid will be meeting that bus by Opal Daniels Park in the Fall!

Just know the Wheaton stop is across the street from Opal Daniels - or at least this year it is. The Blair bus stops on the Opal Daniels side. The bus stops are across from one another. My kid almost got on the wrong one the first day of school, but thankfully was keyed in by a helpful neighbor as to which was the correct bus.
