Looking for resources for homeschooled teen (due to sickness) who wants to socialize

Anonymous
My 16-year old kid will be on medical leave from school for the remainder of the school year and will need to take on-line classes at home. He’s quite upset about it, which I fully understand, and he’s particularly worried about feeling lonely. I am looking for opportunities for him to socialize (not just by taking group classes somewhere but rather by joining an activity or some sort of project or performance ….). Are there concrete options or resources that you know about for teens in his situation? He can’t do sports for now but he’s mobile. Thank you.

There are lots of club and social type things on Outschool.

How about these online language programs through Concordia?

These could supplement a school curriculum.

My kid went to an in-person Chinese camp last summer.

This provider is reputable.

Rockville Science Center offers classes for homeschooled kids. Not sure they go old enough, but it’s stuff like robotics and engineering. Worth looking into!

Probably best to work at maintaining his current friendships though - like setting up a standing Friday night pizza/movie night at your house or whatever he is up for. It’s easier to maintain friendships than building them, and then he will more easily integrate back into high school next year.

Can he still go to school when able and audit - just to keep up with his class?

Look on Facebook for homeschool groups relevant to your area. I agree with PP that he should try to maintain his current friendships. Does he play video games? That’s a way to connect socially from home.

I’m sorry and hope he gets better soon.

What area do you live in? I agree with pp about finding homeschool FB groups in your area.

Thank you all! Yes, the plan is to go back to school next Fall and take on-line classes this school year at his own pace. We will look into the suggestions, thanks. Please keep them coming!
