My husband and I are looking to buy a house around Rockville. Our main concern is finding a good elementary school for her. Our daughter just turned 1 but we want to buy a place where she will thrive. I would really like some feedbacks on the best elementary schools or zipcodes that I should look for while searching for a property in Rockville? Thank you in advance! |
OP, I see no one has responded, so I'll see if I can help you get answers.
In MoCo, there are loads of fabulous elementary schools. You'd be better off asking for what schools to avoid. If you are planning on staying in the house through middle and high school, you'd be advised to look at ms and hs stats as a driver in your decision of neighborhood. Other big questions are how much you are willing to spend, where you and your spouse work and generally how long you want your commute to be. If you can provide some of that information as parameters, you might get some responses. You can now look on RedFin and get school ratings on the map, so you might want to do some searching to get an idea. |
Agree with PP. We are in the Stone Mill elementary district (probably too far north for most who look at Rockville). In my perfect world, I'd want my child to go to College Gardens elementary. |
Agree that most of the elementary schools in Rockville are great, and probably middle schools as well. I would look at the HS cluster -- in general, Wooton, Richard Montgomery, and Walter Johnson, all of which have at least some Rockville students, are considered the best. |
Look in the Wootton cluster. We are in Rockville and not in that cluster and are looking to move back into it (or WJ, Whitman). |
My kids are at College Gardens, and we've been very happy. I'd agree with the PPs that elementary schools in the Wooton, Richard Montgomery, or Walter Johnson clusters will generally be good. |
We are at Ritchie park and are happy with it. |
Just moved from Rockville to further 'down county' (more our culture) Anyway, agree w/College Gardens. Also, Lakewood ES ranks well. |
Here is a vote for Fallsmead Elementary in Rockville (20850), it's in the Wootton districture (Fallsmead / Robert Frost / Thomas Wootton) I love it here. It is a great community. |
Keep in mind that you will be paying a premium for your home if you buy in the Wooton district. It's a fantastic school -- but you can buy more house for your money if you look in the Winston Churchill or Richard Montgomery districts. And those are both excellent schools. |
Churchill is in Potomac which I don't think is known for low housing prices..Richard Montgomery is lower though I agree... |
Odd. We found Wooton to be much more affordable with more/newer house and lot for your money than Churchill or RM areas. A good portion of North Potomac 20878 feeds into Wooton. 20850 in Rockville which feeds Wooten also has much more affordable houses than closer in areas in Rockville. |
I'm in 20854 Potomac. We go to RM. |
How is Richard Montgomery for those who do not do the IB program, for say an above-average student?
Would you choose Wootton over RM? How are the "school cultures" different? |
We're in the RM district. My eldest is in 8th grade, so my knowledge of RM is still theoretical/secondhand, but RM does seem to have a robust AP program in addition to the IB program.
I don't know if my kids will get into the IB program (I think they only take about 10% who apply), but based on what I've heard from friends who have kids there, I'm confident that they'll still be challenged and will have good experiences even if they don't. We did look at houses in the Wooten district, but we made our ultimate choice based on house/neighborhood, not on the high schools, so I don't want to compare the two. Wooten is an excellent school. |
