C in an AP class

Anonymous
Are there any opportunities to “fix” an AP grade in MCPS? My child made barely a D in the first quarter, and barely an A in the second quarter. Would they need to retake a full year of this course to replace the C? I know that summer is not an option but will MCPS let them retake just one semester for example during senior year?

According to the Grading Policy a DA = B

Doesn't surprise me with MCPS's ridiculous grade inflation. Such a joke.

It's because they don't use the percentages actually earned in the class (say, (60+90)/2=75=C).

Instead, they use (1.0+4.0)/2=2.5, which rounds up to 3, which is an A.

The problem with this is that if student gets a 59.5 (D) and a 89.5 (A), they end up with a B for the semester. So ridiculous and hopefully colleges know about this loophole.

Agree that they should use the actual % earned to determine the grade.

If the teacher is any good, the second quarter assessments are cumulative so the grade shows that the student caught up what was missed in q1

Very impressive for your child. I have to believe this rarely happens.

Only the semester grades show on the transcript for college.

89.4+89.4 is also a B

So wondering on general if a student does poorly in one semester in an AP course but well in another, is there an opportunity to retake just one semester? For example, take the AP course for 1 semester and then drop it for the second semester?
Anonymous
Yes-- the semester courses are separate. They could enroll in one semester and replace that semester grade.

Are you sure summer isn't an option? Lots of AP classes are offered online. They have to be MCPS-approved online. You which vendors offer which courses online somewhere on the mcps website.
Anonymous
Likely but you should ask what that is going to look like on the transcript. It would be odd to see Part B of an AP class one year and then Part A of an AP class the following year.

I think this student is an example of this grading policy working well. Didn’t do well at the beginning but was incentivized to improve, caught up and learned the material.

Colleges know that MCPS does not do midterms or final exams and has massive grade inflation. I don’t know if they realize some high school are still using the 50% rule which also pushes grades up

My kid got a C last year in APGov. Was out sick, missed a test, and then accidentally missed the one makeup date. Teacher refused to let him take it late and got a 0 on the test. He did get a 5 on the AP though.
I complained but no one cared even though he has a 504–said if he missed the lunch makeup date, there was nothing to be done. (The makeup was the same week interims were due I think so that might have been part of it.)
So yes C’s happen! It always drives me nuts when people talk about teachers giving endless opportunities — we must get all the strict ones because it definitely isn’t my experience! I think without that test he would have had an A, definitely a high B.
