Zero kids born after Jan on a select team, wwyd if your child was born summer?

I'm curious what you would do in this situation. Child is currently trying out for select grade level team and we can see there are zero kids born after Jan on the roster (birthdays are posted). Child is July of that year. About 20 kids on roster. Would you try out? Would you ask about it or bring up?

No I would not ask about it. Yes, my kid would try out. I am guessing your kid is pretty young and 8 versus 8.5 makes a difference. They likely are not selecting based on age but by skill (and maybe to an extent size, though size can look like skill, too) and the older kids have an advantage in those areas. It is what it is.

I hope you are not teaching your kid not to try out for things he likely won't make (and I am not even saying anything about the likelihood here).

I would go to the tryouts and see where your kid stands. My kid is the baby on a select team that he barely made, and he's frustrated with how little playing time he's getting. I wonder if we should have encouraged him to play on the second team this year so he could play more.

What are you asking? What sport? What are the age cutoffs?

What sport has 20+ players and teams by grade?

Yes, he's 8. No we aren't teaching that but I wonder if the club just isn't a good fit if it's done in this way. Seems they are actively avoiding younger children.

Yes, in sports based on grade, the older kids have a huge advantage. That's why you see so many redshirts and re-classes in basketball, but not in soccer.

Basketball and LAX are both grade based sports on the select level.

They may not be actively avoiding them but at that age, 6 more months of development and growth make a difference. That doesn't mean there is not a younger kid who could totally hang with all those older kids. But they have not found that kid yet. Could be yours. I certainly would not make any determinations about "fit" based on birthdays alone.

I wouldn’t ask about it or bring it up, no.

If he makes the team, put him on and see how it goes.

If it doesn’t go well, then explore other options.

Do you think they are picking players based on age? I wonder how it could have happened this way.

NP - it was important for our DS that he had a similar experience but it was countered by another sport (baseball) where he was among the oldest. He then pretty fully understood about age and likely strength/skill.

Interesting. Did he end up doing baseball or does he do both?
What is the baseball cut off calendar?

ALL 20 are born in January? Or does your sport start in another month?

All 20 are born Sep-Dec, and some in the summer the year before but in the same grade. I just find it shocking it could end up like that randomly.
