My son is gay, but not out with friends. He's going to be 13 this summer and I'm looking for a fun sleepaway camp where he could make friends -- maybe make friends with other gay kids. I've looked online at camps on a PFLAG list and showed him some of the camps. But I wanted to see if anybody had particular suggestions. Also: are there camps that aren't specifically for gay kids that anybody had a good experience at?
Eagles nest camp in NC is very lgbt friendly. We are a gay couple with kids and we sent 2 of our kids there.
Check out https://directory.queercampfair.com/ – it has options for camps that are specifically for LGBTQ kids, but it also has general and specialty camps that are just committed to inclusion. The camps have to opt in to be listed.
You might want to also ask this question on the Camps thread. There are a bunch of great camps that are super LGBTQ friendly even if that isn't their primary focus. We've been sending our DC to Traveling Players which is a theatre camp for a few years now and they're super inclusive and welcoming. They're 16 now and very anxious about the future, but have told me how much they're looking forward to camp this summer because it will give them an excuse to unplug and just focus on something fun for a few weeks.
Long Lake
In the not-specifically-for-gay-kids category, definitely BYM camps |
Odyssey Teen Camp
A friend whose child is trans is sending her child to Camp Shiloh in VA which falls under Bym camps
