Blair has been the top feeder in MD for Harvard, MIT, Princeton, and TJHS has been the top one in VA. But Blair has a magnet program (100 students) while TJHSST is whole school magnet (approx. 500 students in each grade)
Blair Stats: 25 students from Blair got into Harvard, Princeton, and MIT during 2018-2020, so a little more than 8 students per year. Assuming that almost all of these students were from the magnet program, the admission rate would be about 8/100 or 8% https://www.mymcmedia.org/in-maryland-blair-is-top-feeder-school-to-harvard-princeton-mit/ https://www.polarislist.com/best-high-schools-in-maryland TJHSST Stats: 57 students from TJHS got into Harvard, Princeton, and MIT during 2018-2020, so 19 students per year, which implies an admission rate of 19/500 or 3.8% https://www.polarislist.com/best-high-schools-in-virginia This suggests that Blair magnet students have about twice the chance of being admitted to Harvard, MIT, and Princeton compared to TJHSST (8% vs. 4%). Any thoughts on this comparison? |
Getting to MIT Harvard Princeton requires national/international levels of awards such as math Olympiad, science Olympiad. These are not very relevant to school education, but rather personal intelligence and family support. In other words, these kids would still be able to go to Harvard MIT Princeton if they stayed at a local high school. |
| I would not assume all of those admits are in the math and science magnet. There are some incredibly interesting and capable students in the humanities program that may make up a portion of those Blair admits. Similarly I wouldn’t assume those results couldn’t come from the general non-magnet population. |
| Why do we care? These schools are in different states and operate under different admissions processes and curriculum. You also have no idea about legacy status of any admits. |
Wouldn’t it be better to compare the admissions rate of the schools among kids who actually applied? |

My son who went to Blair SMCS is dating a young woman who is a TJ grad. He says he thinks TJ is a stronger program
It is all subjects and the whole school. They both attend Cornell. |
That’s probably true as Blair STEM magnet just gives up on humanity subjects. RMIB the opposite. |
PP was talking about TJ, not RMIB. Blair has great humanities courses. They’re not officially part of the SMCS programming, but the magnet students take them. |
| What's the application %? Northern Virginia want to pay. That's my thought. Less affluent. More military influence where a parent had their college paid for through military service. There's UVA/WM, and even VT. Parents think that's good enough. Maybe they let them apply, not sure though. |
| Northern Virginia *doesn't* want to pay. |
| MoCo does a better job with a classical education. FCPS does well with math/science but not critical thinking, not other liberal arts. Imho. |
| They both cut far back on talent-based admissions in recent years, so meh. |
How about other school districts in MD and NoVA? How do they compare to MCPS and FCPS-VA? |
Which ones? Can you share ones your kid or their friends have taken and found great.? |
I’m referring to RMIB to show MCPS doesn’t have a well rounded magnet program. TJ is better in this regard. |
