We’re considering going there with a 12 year old and 9 year old and a grandparent. Grand parent can hike well. How many days did you do this for? Anything off note for the kids beyond the scenic hikes. I think walking in a glacier will be fun for them. Anythig else we should plan to include? |
A week, at least. There is a ton to see -- especially if you are hiking - and you might want a day or two where you can change up plans in case of bad weather. Skip Calgary, there isnt much to do there. The best part of your trip is in the Rockies. Truly an amazing place and I've been all over the world. You're going to have a blast.
I don't have kids, so can't help you there. Just beware of those glacier walks -- people died in 2020 or 2021 from a bus accident (the bus that drives you onto the glacier). That company is kinda sketch and it's the only one that does it. I've never done it b/c I've walked on glaciers in Alaska. |
I think we did it in about 10 days, mostly split evenly between Jasper and Banff. Stayed in a cabin about 10 miles from downtown Jasper. Stayed in Canmore instead of Banff (cheaper.) Only in Calgary for the first night (lately flight), and a couple hours of the last day before an early afternoon flight home.
One of my favorite trips, but our tween wasn't crazy about all the hiking. (I think we did two big hikes in each park.) |
Note: We also did a guided rafting trip in Jasper that was very cool. And I rented a bike and rode a cool trail between Canmore and Banff. We also took advantage of the rec center in Canmore that had a cool climbing wall for the kids. Sorry for the overuse of cool. |
What time of year are you going, and what are your kids interested in?
|
Op here, we’re thinking late July or early August. I know it’s a busy time. Kids like everything in moderation. I know DH and I will love the scenic hikes. Kids will tire out of it after 2 days. So trying to plan some activities that they can look forward too. |
Take bear spray on your hikes , you can rent it from outdoor gear stores in the area.
(There was an attack when we were there) |
There's an air museum in Calgary. Also Heritage Park might have something interesting for them. My then 13 year old liked it. The big one in Calgary over the summer is the Stampede. I think that's mid-July. |
