Blast transfer but no extras to freeze? Are my chances of pregnancy lower?

Anonymous
This may be a stupid question--but if you have two 'very good' blasts that make it to transfer but no others that make it to freeze, does that somehow speak to the quality of the bunch? I tend to think that if people make it to a blast transfer and then have some to freeze, then the 'crop' of eggs was good and pregnancy is likely. However, when only a few make it to blast and the rest don't make it to freeze, it makes me wonder if the blasts that were transferred were actually about to arrest as well. Thoughts?

If it's any consolation -I had so few eggs (6 retrieved, 5 fertilized, 3 embies made it to Day 3), that I was convinced it wouldn't work.

Two eight-celled were transferred (at least i think they were eight cells), we tried to get one to freeze (no luck).

One happy baby girl later..the rest is history.

Not a stupid question at all! I had eight eggs, but only one fertilized. They ended up doing ICSI on the rest, and we only had one more fertilize. We transferred both and I was convinced that neither one would take. DD is almost six months old.

cycle 1 we had 2 blasts, transferred both and had twins. Nothing left to freeze.
cycle 2 we had 1 blast, transferred one and had a singleton.
Nothing left.

I think at SG that only 40% of successful patients have something left over to freeze. The 2 factors don't correlate!

Good luck!

Just making it to blast means that your odds are still very good!!! Hope the 2WW goes quickly!

OP here-thanks so much. This makes me feel better!

Another success story here--

First fresh cycle: 3 left to freeze, 2 transferred = negative
Second fresh cycle: 0 left to freeze, 2 transferred = positive

YET Another success story here:

20 eggs retrieved, 11 fertilized normally and made it to blastocyst stage.

Transferred one blastocyst day 5. (SGFC said I could do a second embryo based on my quality, but we decided not to).

None of the remaining 10 embryos made it to freezing. This was a downer because we found out before we took our first pregnancy test.

Positive HCG & baby due in 5 weeks

OP, try not to worry (I know, easier said than done!) We had 6 embryos, one of which looked great on Day 3, one of which was pretty good but was slower at developing, and the rest were iffy to the point the clinic opted not to wait to see if the "good one" made it to blast. We implanted the best two on Day 3, but since the clinic had previously promoted waiting until blast and the other 4 did not make it to freezing, I was *sure* it hadn't worked.

Not sure whether he was the "good egg" or the one that lagged behind, but my son's pretty perfect to me. Good luck!
