A less religious When Bad Things Happen to Good People?

Also, Forgetting What You Can’t Forgive?

I am desperate for a book like this but don’t feel like being preached to about God. No offense to anyone who is religious or finds comfort in this, but it’s not for me.

Any recommendations?

Serious questions.

Are you the person stuff is happening to?

And is it one kind of bad thing or kind of an "everything" situation.

Have you considered Youtube vlogs? I found a couple that are very interesting about people who are starting life over.

Yes, I am the person. It’s sort of always been an “everything” thing, but a specific thing currently. I’d love some suggestions of vlogs, because I would listen to the books on audiobook anyway.

Not sure if my recs will fit your needs but here goes:

GoobieandDoobie - guy who gave up neurosurgery because the profession is flawed in its approach to healing

LitNomad - this guy is a Finance Bro. But interesting to listen to because he explains his former work and how he plans to enjoy his future life on the road.

Bad things did not happen to these people but they have made radical life shifts and I find that interesting to listen to.

Many years ago, on NPR, I heard a story about a black guy who wanted to replicate a walk by Peace Pilgrim. It didn't go as he hoped. People were wary of him and he had foot problems very quickly. It was so touching that I actually searched for his contact info and sent him an e-mail of encouragement. And he wrote back. Can't find the show now but here's information on his original inspiration.

Maybe you'll find encouragement and strength in deeply human stories vs. explanatory books. Because satisfactory explanations often don't exist and we just have to keep going as best we can.

I like to hear NPR StoryCorps stories. And in the last few weeks, I listened to a few of the This American Life episodes recommended in the recent DCUM thread.

Wishing you peace and some more recs from others.

This podcast is wonderful. My advice is to skim through the list of episodes and just try whatever jumps out/speaks to you, personally.

I’ve found this book to be really helpful over the years. It’s not overtly god-focused, but it’s definitely spiritual (Zen).

Though I’ve never been able read it straight through (it’s too much for me all at once … ), I come back to it again and again when life feels heavy and difficult. Maybe skim the preview chapters on GoogleBooks to see if anything resonates?
