Wondering if anyone has experience with this.
We may purchase a home that is outside of the school boundary for the schools that my kids currently go to, just by a couple of blocks. Is there a way to appeal the boundaries to stay at their current school? Are we required to re-register them for next school year? What about when they go to middle/high school? If we don’t change our address, would MCPS find out/fine us? |

You can apply for a COSA (Change of School Assignment), but it is not easy to be approved.

If the current school is under-booked (many are overcrowded), there is a better chance of this. Also, OP may need to provide their own transportation. |

For the registration question: you don’t re-register them every year in elementary, but you do send home an emergency form with your address on it where they will send official paperwork to. When they go to middle and high school, you will have to re-register.
I’m not saying people don’t do it, but it is a type of fraud. |

You can try for a COSA but you should definitely not count on being able to stay. If staying is important to you, stay within bounds.

+1. unless your kid is entering the final year of that school or the new in boundary school is severely over enrolled the chances of you being approved for a COSA are really slim. And CO has already announced they are paying attention to the COSAs and timeline this year. |
