Does nanny drive your car or her car?

Anonymous
Usually I drive nanny and my toddler to storytime at library or gymnastics and go run errands or take a work call while they are doing the activity but thinking it would be way easier if nanny just drove. My husband doesn't love the idea (not sure why - i'm not the greatest driver). Do you let nanny drive your car? I think that would be easier since the car seat is already installed. And if nanny drives her own car I presume you would need another car seat, and reimburse for gas... what do other folks do?

If she drives your cars regularly with the kids, you need to add her to your insurance policy.

If she drives her own car, you should not just reimburse for gas, you should reimburse for regular wear and tear to the car as well. So reimburse her at least the IRS mileage rate.

If she has the option to choose I would ask her.
When I was a Nanny I started out using my own car with seats they let in my car during the week and took back for the weekend. Then they bought a 3rd car/van me to use which was perfect.
If you have the funds and will have a nanny for a while I would consider doing this.

I agree. Also, if your kid will messy in the nanny's car (snacks, muddy shoes, etc.) you should pay for regular car detailing.

Our nanny drove our car. When I spoke with our insurance agent, he said we didn’t need to add her to our insurance as long as she was separately insured. I didn’t really follow up, and fortunately, she never got in an accident while driving our car.

We have always asked our nanny to use our car for three reasons:
1. Nannies have a life and will often need to remove car seats from their car for personal reasons and reinstall them. I do not want to have to check every day that she installed them correctly.
2. There is a liability question and concern that she maintains her car, that it wasn’t previously in an accident or otherwise a danger to my children.
3. Reimbursing mileage is such a hassle!

Absolutely not. Her own car. We pay mileage. Yes, she has another car seat.

Are you ok using your insurance if she’s in an accident?

Who do you think the person she’s in an accident with (her fault or not) is going to sue? You or the nanny? Make sure you have umbrella insurance to cover your assets if you allow others to drive your cars.

NP. An employer can be sued for accidents caused by a nanny if she was performing work duties, even if she was driving her own car.

I “upgraded” my car and she drove my old car. We added her to our insurance policy plus I have an expansive umbrella policy.

I just never felt comfortable with anyone driving my kids in their cars. I don’t know way exactly. I wouldn’t love having to install/take out car seats all the time, mileage reimbursement seems like a hassle, etc.

Either upgrade one of your cars or buy a newer used car with all the safety features and put her on your insurance. She should not have to provide a car for work or driving your kids.

Reason #4! I probably have better coverage!

Do you plan on eventually having your child in preschool? If so, it may make sense for you to have a car for your nanny to use.

Nope! You hire a nanny not her vehicle. Parents most of the time provide their OWN vehicle to drive the children. Mileage is NOT enough and absolutely no consideration for the Nanny.
