It seems like all AP, Honors, and AL classes get weighted the same for the weighted GPA, according to https://coursebulletin.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/Home/Introduction#gradingandreportinggpa I just want to check because I don't always trust MCPS. So in particular, Computer Programming 1, which is an AL course, gets the same weighting as AP CS Principles, correct?
|
| What's AL?? |
| Correct. AL = post-AP. |
| Also weighted GPA is meaningless because MCPS doesn't rank students and colleges have their own systems. |
Can you give example of what a post-AP course is? |
OP here. I gave an example, Comp Programming 1 (which isn't technically post-AP.) Also Multivariate Calculus and Molecular Genetics etc. |
AL is Advanced Level. Not necessarily post-AP. It just means classes that build off of an earlier class's knowledge. Honors, AP, AL, and IB classes are all weighted the same. |
| Spanish 5 is also AL. |
Can't Comp Prog 1 be taken after Foundations of Computer Science and before AP CS Principles? The course doesn't indicate AL in its title. |
| So basically the only course that the most advanced students will have that is unweighted in their HS GPA is PE — presuming they took algebra and the first two years of a language in MS. |
Or many electives. |
It explains here it's AL (page 19) https://coursebulletin.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/publications/HSCourseBulletin2025.pdf Sure, it would be easier if these classes had "AL" in the title... |
| Will check school's listings. |
| I read in another thread than an honors class has the same extra weight as an AP? |
Yes |
