Burning Kids' Energy in This Cold?

Anonymous
What activities are your kids doing to stay active and burn off energy with this unusually cold weather we are having? My kids aren't in winter sports, so we don't have practices and games. Are you bundling up and going to the playgrounds after school?

An indoor obstacle course down our long hallway. That will tire them and the dog out. Win win!

You need an organized activity? We just go for long walks and play in the snow.

Just get proper clothing for playing outside.

Our local rec center has open gym time for kids. Mine do that sometimes.
Aside from that after school not a lot. She does do basketball at school though and for a rec league so not completely idle.
On days off school we do urban air or skyzone with friends at times.

Not helpful
Not OP, but we have proper clothing, we hike, walk the dog etc. we are outdoorsy
But I don’t want to go stand at a playground with my kids when it’s this cold.

So dumb

So far we've been skiing and hiking, plus lots of general outdoor play. I was outside doing chores for 4 hours yesterday (rural property, stuff always has to be done), and as long as I was properly layered up, I was quite comfortable.

There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.

how is it not helpful? kids in fairbanks are outside every day. this year is unusually cold for here, sure, so you may need to buy gear you wouldn't normally. gear up.

My kids were utterly uninterested in freezing while not being able to do much because most of our yard melted before the wintry mix on Sunday so now there's basically blades of grass sticking up between ice. They're decently creative kids but the cold plus the fact that they'd have to come up with something that's not typical snow activities to do was too much for them to come up with.

Grateful for PE class today!

We went sledding yesterday.
We’ve also been hiking. My youngest loves finding ice on the local creeks to poke at, play with, break, etc.
I hear people are playing ice hockey on the C & O Canal.
For indoor options, try a mini trampoline or have a dance party in your living room.

Lots of playing outside and cooking/baking/arts and crafts inside. We have good slopes for sledding in our yard so no travel needed. One day at Scramble for a big energy burn this weekend.

???

I just cannot relate to people like this. Blades of grass. Dear Lord. How will your kids cope?

My kids are teens and young adults now, but bundled up, they were able to do all the things they usually do outside. Run around with a ball, find interesting stones, play with sticks, play with the dog, play make-believe while running around...

Your kids just stand around whining because they need someone to create an organized play activity?!?!

Maybe that's what it sounds like, but no.

Normally when it's not freezing they find whatever standing water they can and turn it into soup and play complex games of make believe.

When there's snow on the ground they sled, build forts, and play make believe.

Yesterday it wasn't obvious what make believe they could play outside, so they continued with the complex magnatile town populated with various figurines they had been doing all weekend, then moved onto figurines in kinetic sand and playdough.
