Jefferson Scholarship - what comes after 1st regional interview

Anonymous
If you have the good fortune to get through the 1st regional interview (our DD had one earlier this month), what might come next? And when? Does every candidate have a 1st regional interview? It’s hard to know how exactly the process works, even with research.

In the Northern Virginia region, there were 68 candidates in the first round of interviews. They were split into about 8 or 9 groups. Each group will send 1 candidate to Round 2 of interviews. The region will then send 2-3 candidates on. Should hear back in a couple of days. The last of Round 1 was yesterday.

Anybody know what happens after the regional interviews are finished? The website seems to indicate the final interviews are all virtual. I'm curious if there are multiple rounds of final interviews.

My daughter asked that in her interview a couple weeks ago and was told the final weekend was all virtual. I have no idea if that is just one meeting or many meetings, it's such a long shot so she didn't want to keep asking about it....however I do know it will be virtual (however many meetings it is....lol)

Thanks for this info. Sounds like you're speaking on good authority. What a competitive process.

Are the regions determined by the location of the school or the residence of the student?

This. That's what we told our DC who is out of NOVA. Good luck.....but this is one highly qualified area. I don't know how you would pick!

Ooof. Undoubtedly, some kids are going to have to make a tough choice.

The website says the Jefferson finalist weekend is virtual. Any idea how many days it takes?

Are there any candidates that UVA admissions will send to interview for Jefferson?

I think they do, however, it's probably a very small number.

No. the Jefferson is separate from admissions. FWIW my DS was his high schools' nominee (first hurdle) and made regionals but did not make it to finals, which was then a competition on-site at UVA. He still went on to UVA and had a great time. Now at Yale law

There's another thread about this that has a post about the entire process.
