We are finishing a big renovation, and try as I might, I cannot get DH to give up the idea that we need a sleeper sofa.
Before anyone tells me to drop this idea, I'll spare you all the background but this is an ongoing (jokey) argument for years. We both work from home and need private offices, plus have one kid. That uses all four bedrooms. No basement and no bonus room or den. We have already lived in this house for 8 years and have had 3 people stay ever. We have local family who have lots of room to host out of town family. And our friends with kids are at the age where they'd rather stay in hotels. So it's not like we are rudely turning people away. But DH has a bizarre fixation on wanting to have the ability to accommodate people - even if they don't actually want to stay. I've argued, he's pushed back. So I'm at the point where i need to concede. This leaves me with a room that needs to house DH's work desk, needs to be a closed door space where DS and friends can watch tv and play video games so I don't have to hear it, and also have a pull out couch. Prior to the renovation, we had an American Leather couch we got at Room & Board (Berin model) on the recommendation of pretty much everyone on the internet that this is the most comfortable sleeper sofa. And it really is a great pull out - extremely comfortable. I had no guilt putting those 3 friends on it over the last 8 years. But the problem is it was extremely uncomfortable to just sit on. Hard cushions, not deep enough.... it just wasn't the kind of sofa experience you want for your kid's hang out room. Given that this couch will be used almost never for a sleeper sofa, I'm at the point where I don't actually care if the bed part is comfortable. I just want a comfortable couch for sitting. Wondering if anyone can recommend a sleeper sofa that is comfy for sitting on? And who cares if it is uncomfortable for sleeping on? |

I stumbled on your post searching for info on American Leather. I'm in the beginning stages of researching and my designer did not like the Berin for our space. I'm looking at buying from a local furniture store who sells the whole range of American Leather. There are three levels that each style comes in. Maybe look into different models? Without having sat on any yet, I am looking at Gaines model/Comfort line (the "top" line)

OP likely isn't paying attention to this anymore. However, I would create something like a mattress topper for the sofa cushions before I would get rid of a decent bed setup.
Maybe it hasn't been broken in enough. If the cushions are removable it could be possible to put a foam layer underneath them or to restuff them. Then also let the kids use fleece blankets on top while gaming. |
