Traffic between Lewes/Rehoboth?

Anonymous
We are planning a week trip to Lewes/Rehoboth this summer- 7 and 9 year olds. We prefer the beaches near Lewes (kids prefer the smaller waves in Lewes) but want the attractions in Rehoboth (boardwalk, funland, arcade). We would probably only do 2-3 beach days. Debating between staying near Lewes and doing the Park and Ride shuttle to Rehoboth a few days or staying in Rehoboth and driving to the beaches a few days. Is traffic worse 1 direction over the other? We will probably also do Jungle Jims and mini golf on Rt. 1 also. Thanks for any thoughts!

It’s all bad in the summer. Personally I’d select the place where you prefer to spend more time and hence will have less driving.

Route 1 is just a mess from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Just be prepared for traffic, lots of traffic.

If it were me, I'd stay in Rehoboth if you afford to stay somewhere close to the boardwalk that includes parking. That way you don't have the headache of trying to find parking. It's easier to find parking at the Lewes beach if you're there early.

Agree with this. And go to the Lewes beach early and don’t leave hungry and/or without a plan for your next meal in case you get trapped in traffic for awhile.

It’s not so bad. Really. We have a beach house in Lewes and go to Rehoboth for dinner all the time even during summer beach months. It might take 30 minutes instead of 15, but it isn’t going to take hours.

Awful awful awful. On Saturdays it will take an hour from Lewes to Rehoboth. We stay in downtown Rehoboth, and I love some Lewes restaurants, but won’t go to dinner there because of traffic. It’s gotten so bad.

Get a place where it’s harder to park. I don’t mind traffic but finding parking is so stressful. So I would be more likely to rent in Rehoboth walkable to the boardwalk stores and ice cream. Then do day trips to lewes for swimming

We stay in Rehoboth and go to Lewes all the time. A few tips:

-Avoid the week around the Fourth of July. This is the worst week for beach traffic.

-For beach days in Lewes, leave your lodging early in the morning (no later than 9:30) and pack enough lunch and snacks for the day so you don't have to leave the beach for food. Time your beach days for weekdays, which are slightly better than weekends.

-Rent or bring bikes. There's a really nice bike trail that connects Rehoboth with Lewes. also you can bike from Rehoboth to Cape Henlopen Park.

It's bad going there on a Friday and coming home on a Sunday.

I would avoid going from one to the other on the weekends as that is when you will hit bad traffic on Route 1 but during the week, it's not terrible. Parking in Rehoboth is the bigger issue.

This. I spend a lot of time in both, and the traffic sucks. E-bikes on the trail for FTW.

We live in Rehoboth during the summer and the traffic is TERRIBLE going to/from Lewis. It has been increasing every year, where there is no good time to travel. There are plenty of days when the ocean is calm in Rehoboth
