How much are you paying your babysitter - 17 years old, language skills that are helpful for my family, own car, responsible? |
Babysitter or nanny?
We paid our date night babysitter $15, but the kids were asleep for nearly the entire shift. Our summer nanny got $20 |
20 bucks an hour. |
This conversation is pointless without geographic data. Where do you live OP?
We'd pay about $20/hr for what you describe. Normally teenage sitters get a little less (around $17-18) but the language skills, having own transportation, and just generally being very reliable (plus being a known quantity to our family) would merit a raise IMO. I'd probably give them a $1 raise each year they were with us until I got to $22-23. |
$15 |
Oy, guess we overpay. 2 kids, 2yo and 8yo. $30/hr. Sitter is one of our previous daycare teachers, so a woman in her late 30s. Bethesda. |
High COL area (more than DC area) in Florida. Language skills are native French, not Spanish (which every babysitter would speak). French is rare but somewhat sought after as there are a few French elementary schools in the area. |
That is right for a daycare worker who is 30. OP asked about a 17 yr old. |
20 an hr for OPs situation. But best thing to do is ask your neighbors. |
Because you mentioned language skills, $20/hr. Otherwise $15/hr |
Daycare workers don’t get $30 😆 try $18 |
For two kids? |
We pay our 19yo occasional sitter $20 an hour but guarantee her $50. Sometimes we need the full 2.5 hours sometimes we only need 90 mins. She will drop DD off at her activity sometimes. She used to babysit twice a week and now it’s about once a week. |

We’re in Arlington paying younger teens about $20/hour and older teens/college kids $25/hour +. It also depends on number of kids. If we need them to babysit all 3 (including a toddler) we bump it up to $27/hour. If they’re just watching 1 or 2 kids (like another kid is off at a sleepover or whatever) then $20-25. This is close in NOVA. |
