Chinese immersion school lottery

Anonymous
We’re moving to dc suburb from MA and looking to enroll our kid in kindergarten with a Chinese immersion program this year. I heard that the programs in Potomac and Rockville program both received lots of applications and have really low acceptance rates. The lottery opens for all students in Montgomery county. But I couldn’t get the statistics of the pool size and enrollment number. Do be they prioritize students in the home school district when enrolling? Does anyone know how much chance for a student gets in the kindergarten program through lottery? Thanks!

If you move into Potomac ES boundaries, you will automatically get a spot.

Should DD do immersion or CES?

Thanks! I couldn’t find any rental within that school district, it seems people have to buy a house to guarantee a spot. I called mcps and they said all applicants in Montgomery county has the same chance otherwise it’s shady. But I called Potomac ES; they said living in the district has better chance.

If you are ride or die Chinese immersion, the only way to guarantee it would be to move in-bounds for Potomac. They basically run a single-school program that is open to the "lottery" for show only.

As for CES, it's a lottery of qualified students. I would not assume any child would get in because there is a luck element.

I appreciate the information. The Potomac ES district is so small and has limited housing

Correct. The way I understand it is this: Other immersion programs run lotteries that are county-wide, but Potomac first fills the Chinese immersion classes internally, and then runs a lottery IF there are spots remaining.

Does College Gardens Elementary School in Rockville offer Chinese instruction? It might be through the pre-IB program...

Might be worth checking.
