What camps when your DS/DD turn 13 years old?

Anonymous
One of our kids is turning 13 next month and is aging out of the camps we've traditionally used. Some of them have Counselor in Training for 13-15, but no regular participation.

Would appreciate any camp suggestions (ideally closer to Falls Church) for kids 13+. Thank you!

My kid liked sailing camp, they take kids up to 17.

Haven’t done these yet but plan to enroll my kid this summer. There are craft camps up to 18 year olds for all sorts of things like glass blowing, metal casting, welding, blacksmithing, jewelry making, pottery etc.

At 13, both my kids have chosen one sport to focus on and did mostly summer camps related to their sports.

At 14 and beyond, they had summer jobs and also both did pre collage programs for a week or 2 during the summer. These were a great way to start to get them thinking about what they’d like to major in in college

Specialized sports camps. In our case, field hockey.

My kid did a service camp and one of those camps where they go somewhere (Zava Zone, pool, rafting) each day.

We are in moco so may not be helpful
Moco has a summer rec camp for MS kids age 11-14. DD did it last year and loved it so will do it again this year. It runs for 6 weeks but we’ll prob do 4 weeks.
MCPD has a free Police camp for MS and rising HS kids. It’s 2 1 week sessions
Camp Sonshine, they do field trips in the tween years to fun pools, lakes, amusement parks etc.

I have two teens. I put them in higher level sports camps (basketball and tennis) and each kid did an academic camp (writing). They also played on summer sports teams for their sport (tennis, basketball.

Sailing camp (near National airport) or sleepaway camp (which can get expensive!)

Where is this sailing camp, or do you have a name? We have done sailing camp at the naval academy and its great but pricy.

Camp Letts teaches sailing (although is a YMCA camp and has lots of other activities as well). At 13 my kids went there, as well as did high level sports camps themselves, and, volunteered to help the younger kids at their sports camp (gotta love those mandated MCPS volunteer hours)

Here is the link to the sailing camp. Note the hours can be tricky if you don’t work from home

There are some more basic camps for teens that do things like field trips to amusement parks, bowling, etc. You can filter by age at any of the park district camp listings. In my experience, the teen camps don’t fill as quickly, but I last did sign up 2 years ago.

You can also have a few weeks of staying home.
