Panda tea party

Anonymous
My second grader wants her bday to be a panda themed tea party in our relatively small apartment. We’ll be doing cake (with a panda on it) so I don’t want too many of the tea party foods to be sweets. (She specifically wants cucumber sandwiches and cucumber / avocado sandwiches but I’m skeptical about her friends eating those!) There are some peanut allergies but no other food restrictions.

Any suggestions for food that’s easy to prep in advance and serve tea party style? Bonus points if it’s black, white, black and white, or something else that could be affiliated with pandas. Thanks!

Oops - pp here - mentioned size because I don’t think I’ll be able to put that much out. Anything that could be prepped in advance or kept to the side and easily replenished would be great.

Serve foods pandas eat, or foods that LOOK like foods they eat. And, there's nothing wrong with having a plate of almond butter & jam sandwiches for the kids who don't want cucumber. Go simple - have black & white cookies. Panda napkins.

NP and black and white cookies would be cute. I saw that you have peanut allergies so it may not be a good idea, but my DD likes both the Meiji chocolate panda cookies (they come in little pouches or cartons) and that licorice that has the panda on it. Unfortunately a quick search suggests that they changed the packaging so it might not have a panda on it anymore.

My DD got panda earmuffs from Amazon for Christmas last year. They were ~$10 so a little pricey if you are looking for a favor but it would be fun because they could wear them all winter.

I think you’re over complicating this. Other than chocolate, you’re probably not going to find much kid-friendly food that’s black, and you’ve already said you don’t want sweets. Trying to find black, savory, tea-party food, that kids will like, is I think reaching too far. I suspect the kids will be less enthused about thematic foods than they will the cake. Just serve whatever food you want on panda-themed and/or black and white tableware (tablecloth, napkins, plates, cups, forks, etc.). If you really want to go all out, you could try getting a panda-shaped sandwich cutter for your cucumber sandwiches, but I suspect that would be more trouble than it’s worth. I think it’s better if you keep the food tea-party themed, and let the decorations carry the panda theme.

There are these Japanese panda paw cookies- you can get them in the US easily. I’ve seen them at mini marts and grocery stores. I have a kid obsessed with pandas soooo…

What a fun idea! This might be a bit much but here are some ideas for a panda themed party from Oriental Trading: https://www.fun365.orientaltrading.com/article/panda-party

Maybe there's something you can use. Also, if you have an Asian store near you check out their snack aisle for panda related munchies.

Good luck and have fun!

Mkae a few of the sandwiches on pumpernickel bread to have some black and white there. Might not get eaten but it will look good.

Rice and seaweed look black and white. Search panda bento and separately panda onigiri.

Panda plates, napkins, and cups will got a long way to make it a panda party. Don’t overthink the food.

I agree with adding cream cheese and jelly sandwiches. Have some cheese sticks with a panda face and paws drawn on with black sharpie. Those panda cookies you can get at world market.

Print out some panda coloring sheets. That’s plenty.

Sounds fun!
