Istanbul and Athens in October, what to know?

Anonymous
We are thinking of going to Istanbul, then Athens for a family destination wedding. I have never been to either before. Any tips? What should I know?

We loved Istanbul, including my 9 and 11 year old! It is friendly, relatively inexpensive, easy to get around, great food, and a gorgeous city. I had some fears because I didn’t know what to expect but it was all in my head. October is probably a great month because it won’t be hot. We went in August.

Both cities are amazing! So much history, culture, fantastic food, etc… make sure to take a boat across the Bosphorous in Istanbul. You can even take a commuter ferry and sit outside (on top) for the amazing views. And make sure to visit a rooftop restaurant/cafe in the Sultanahmet area for the spectacular views (especially around sunset).

I also love Athens for the ancient ruins, museums, outdoor markets, coffee (I’m not a coffee drinker but for some reason, they make delicious coffee concoctions!)

Istanbul is wonderful. It’s main problem is the scale— there is just so much to see and do, and so much history, and then also so much stuff just outside the city, that it’s often hard to recommend things.

What’re you interested in? How many days? Age of any kids?

We went to Istanbul with kids (7&9) in November a few years ago - it was cooler and rainier than I expected, so check your weather and pack accordingly. But fabulous trip - so much to see and do, great food!, easy to get around.

The weather will be lovely in Athens and the water warm enough to swim in if you make it to the beach. Perfect time to go.
