cold weather resort for Christmas 2025

Anonymous
I know. I know. But I find that planning a full year in advance saves so much money that I can't NOT do it.

We usually take 5-7 days between Christmas and returning to school/work and go somewhere warm. But the teens have asked for a cold weather location next time. Would fly anywhere but since we're not huge skiiers, shouldn't center on that. Priorities are things to do besides skiing and ease from airport. Could rent a house or do a resort. Just looking for locations we can fly to that have things to do in winter. Would potentially invite my brother and his family (elementary aged kids). Any ideas?

If money were no object, I would stay here next Christmas.

Mohonk looks amazing. There is also a club med in Quebec that even if you don't ski looks fun. There's also a lot to do in Chicago, Boston, Toronto, Montreal, or Ottawa...you could stay in a nice hotel and sightsee. If 7 days, you could also do Europe...I went to Finland in January once and it was cold but fun!

I would go to the Château Lake Louise. Yes there is skiing but you can also ice skate, snowshoe, cross country ski, do a dogsled ride, etc. It is spectacular.

I just went to Lake Louise & Banff for a week (for a girls trip without kids). We did NOT stay at the Chateau but visited during the day. I thought it was absolutely lovely!!! Only thing is that there were some warmer temps before/around Christmas and coupled with an accident with someone drilling into the ice, the ice castle broke through the ice. It had since refrozen and is partially above water but it's pretty sad looking and it was blocked off. Because of the cold and then weird warmer temps and then cold again, the lake had some cracks that had refrozen and they were still working on smoothing them out my first day there so the ice skating area was much smaller and rougher than usual. It improved significantly by my 3rd morning and was HUGE and amazing to skate on! I skated for 2 solid hours lol.

I also enjoyed the grab & go coffee shop at the resort; their pastries were delicious and their coffee pretty good. There is an ice bar on the property and it's cool but the drinks were super expensive at 22 cad for a boozy hot choco. TBH, I'd bring my own airplane bottle of liquor next time and grab a plain hot choco and add it in lol.

They also had a grill outside for grilled cheese, soup, and I think pretzels. I didn't get it but it looked great.

The sleigh rides looked great for families and I would 100% go with kids. I didn't see a spot for actual sledding but I'm sure there are were lots of spots. There's SO much to do around there - it's magnificent. 10/10 recommend.

what are the prices for the area by the Chateau for renting for a 5 people famly?

We spent a Christmas at Chateau Lake Louise and it was great, though a long trip to get there. The Chateau in Quebec City is an easier alternative, though not as scenic in my view. The Club Med in Quebec is several hours north of Quebec City, at Le Massif ski area. It does have a number of activities, but I’m not sure I’d trek there if you don’t ski.
