Hey mamas and papas-
Girls summer college volleyball camps are about to open. Can you a share your recommendations, experiences and any red flags or ones you’d warn folks away from? I recognize folks go to camp for different reasons and there can be better training in local private / 1:1. But this post is about good, bad and ugly. Both the Vb exposure and overall campus experience. We did commuter camps at Penn State and Marymount University last year. Penn state was cool to mix in with coaches and players but the skill level wasn’t super high in general for the group. Marymount was a lot of reps and intensity. Kiddo was exhausted every day. Apparently the Marymount food was the winner of the two. Thanks |

| DD (15) did the George Mason positional camp last summer. She's a late comer to the sport, and we had cobbled together a series of privates, club-run clinics/camps and this. For her, the Mason camp was least valuable - if you weren't already at the high competitive level, you were shuffled off to the other court, and not a lot of feedback/pointers to improve. For the same amount, could have scheduled 3-4 more private sessions and gotten more out of those sessions. |

Thanks for that. Good to know. Probably a similar experience we’ve had with some other college camps. Some are herding high volumes of cats. Camps are a great fundraiser. |

This is generally the case for all levels of play. If you don't make it to the top court you benefit little and you are wasting your money. |

| What about some of the sleep away volleyball camps like UVA, JMU or position specific camps at American University. Thanks! |

| JMU advanced camp is sold out this year, but my daughter has been for the past two years and loved it. They switched the schedule around I believe, but you can sign up for like two days of position camp and then two or three of general as I recall. There’s technically a day off in between but they can stay overnight. They live in Jennings and most camp is at UREC. She thought it was great; good coaching and fun experience. Locally she did American and also liked it although I think preferred the going away aspect of JMU |

My daughter and her friends felt the same about JMU. They had all positive things to say about it and signed up again on the first day of registration this year. It’s sold out keep in mind for future years. They stayed overnight in between the two camps last year and will do the same this year. They liked the coaching, dorms, food and had an all around good time. |

Coach Johns is running volleyball clinics this summer in NOVA. She is a great coach and got my non-club playing DD on track for her HS team a few years ago.

This reminds me of the last year's tryout saga, where Legacy officials tried to advertise while pretending to have no connection to the club. Pretty much everyone else was saying that taking the teams in a new club to so many qualifiers doesn't make any sense, but they were claiming the opposite. Let's see... LVA 14-1: 2364/4959 LVA 15-1: 3641/4296 LVA 16-1: 1656/4214 They managed to roster 3 teams at the most popular age levels. They are not doing bad for a new club (especially the 16s), but they are nowhere near the point where travelling to multiple qualifiers is justified. Quite a waste of time and money for most of the families involved. Conclusion: trust the collective wisdom, not the club officials who are trying to hype their clubs. I have some doubts that a parent whose daughter made it onto the HS team a few years back makes the effort to advertise a coach out of the blue on a dormant thread. Just saying... |

Given this is anonymous I will not be able to convince you. Is this how club vball works? So much distrust? We are an AAU basketball family and so glad DD didn’t give it up for this nonsense. |

You should give me the benefit of the doubt because of the the Legacy debacle before the tryouts. Let me get this straight: you are the parent of a HS volleyball player who never played club. You have little interest in volleyball because you are a basketball family. Somehow you get the sportsengine link and you decide that volleyball parents would be interested. You dig up an inactive volleyball thread and advertise the coach who helped your DD make the HS team a few years back. Then you stick around to see how your message is received. That sounds credible. |
