on sunday, i bought some fruit at safeway. three organic peaches and three organic nectarines that were mostly flawless and not quite ripe yet. i put them in a fruit bowl with two apples, both of which had no blemishes and were not old and an unripe avocado.
today when i got home from work, all of the fruit except the avocado was rotten. giant patches of smushy grey and brown patches. nasty and inedible. what gives and how do i prevent this? |
| Ethylene gas in some of the fruit caused the other fruit to ripen too quickly and rot. Don't ask me which of the fruits caused the reaction in the other fruit. But I'm serious about the gas... look it up. There are some fruits that shouldn't be put in the same bowl. Your combo sounds like the perfect storm. |

I tried googling, and found this:
Ethylene producers (keep away from other fruits and vegetables) Apples Apricots Cantaloupe Figs Honeydew Apples Bananas Tomatoes Avocados Nectarines Peaches Pears Plums So it looks like you had a bunch that disagreed! They probably all caused each other to spoil. http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=1103 |
| Fruit bowls are awful inventions. Sure, they look nice, but they just cause your fruit to ripen faster because it's all stacked on top of each other. Next time, just set it out on the counter. |
| Putting peaches and nectarines in a paper bag on the counter will also help them ripen. |
Geez, that's basically everything one would have in a fruit bowl. So basically I guess only put one type of fruit in the bowl?? |
