Has anyone converted from copper to pex?
If so, how did it go? Any recommendations? What did it cost? We are looking to make the change to a 24 port manabloc with all home runs due to aging copper with persistent leaks. |
| Usually you want to go the other direction. If your copper pipes are leaking they are either very old or your house is moving. |
| Why? Inferior product with unknown chemical interaction. It’s cheaper but not as good. |
+1. |
| Gross. PEX has micro plastics. Then you’d need a filter to get rid of it. |
|
We’ve done the research. It’s safe for California houses!!! Just not fire resistant. I shoulda figured this would spin into chaos by the third post.
I hope none of you leave your house and live in a bio dome self sufficient all organic bubble otherwise you’re doomed, sorry to break it to you. Have your read the reports on organic food? Yes, our house is 60+yrs old and copper, more so the joints, are starting to leak. No, our house is not moving. Lol. |
| PEX is known for growing algae inside of it. |
|
Algae needs sunlight to grow, correct?
These would not be in any sunlight. Keep em coming. |
Correct. And PEX isn't UV resistant so it shouldn't be installed where it is exposed to sun anyway. |
|
Brilliant. Glad we got that covered. No algae and no sunlight. Yep, found that in the research.
Back to the original post, anyone with anything half way constructive or should I chalk this one up as a L? |
|
Why would anyone switch to plastic pipes?
Replace your copper pipes with copper. This one is a no brainer. |
|
The copper pipes are leaking because the joint compound they used in the 1960s and 70s corrode copper over time, even if the plumber accidentally touched the middle of the pipe with the substance.
They don't use that kind of joint compound any more. Replace your copper pipes with copper. |
Don't take plumbing advice from anyone who talks about the "joint compound" in copper pipes. |
| Replaced some of ours with pex. Copper gets pinhole leaks, which we had quite a few and its a huge prolem. |
First, its not joint compound. Joint compound is for drywall. Its solder and copper can get pin hole leaks anywhere, not just at the fittings and cause serious issues. |
