4 years of language? Summer class ?

Anonymous
Anyone have experience in taking French 4 outside of HS to make room for other classes that my son wants to take? He is a Sophmore in French 3 and wants to complete 4 years of a language but can't figure out how to take it inside of the school year because there are other classes he wants. He also needs to fit in Health. Is it possible to do 2 health segments in one summer? Thanks!

Summer classes don't have all the school year options, OP. I'm not sure they have French 4. Kids usually get rid of Health A and B in the summer. My kid took both health classes the summer before 9th grade.

I agree that fitting in all the course work can be challenging for some kids, especially those who want to take the double periods of science!

^ you can email the summer school representative - the email is on the MCPS website. She's very nice.

French 4 is not offered over the summer.

Maybe a course at MC? There is no magic in French 4 if the other classes are more important to him.

Some school districts do not count middle school languages and MCPS French 4 is the same as French 2. I think taking it all 4 years in HS or getting to AP is the gold standard but only matters if you are applying to super competitive schools.

What do you mean that French 4 is the same as French 2? Do you mean French 4 in MCPS is the same as French 2 in Montgomery College?

No MCPS starts counting "HS level" classes in middle school. Many school systems do not. When many colleges look at a transcript, they will look at the 2 classes taken in HS. They will not care that they are numbered 3 and 4 by MCPS.

They’re not stupid, they’ll know it means the kid spent more years in that language than a kid doing 1 and 2. And they will take the difference into account.

I think all of the world language options in summer school are for credit recovery only.

Recommend summer health highly!

You can definitely take both semesters of health in the summer (but do you want to spend so much of your summer doing this??)

It's also easy to take the tech requirement in summer. Most other courses aren't so easy to take in summer, though there are a lot of online AP options available, so you could take language in the school year and move one of your intended ap courses online. (But again, do you want to spend your summer this way?)

But many kids take a language in middle school that does not show up on their HS transcript. It does not mean MCPS kids have more language.
