Going for annual girls trip to NYC over Presidents Day weekend with my 10 year old DD. We’ve done Wicked and Harry Potter in prior years. Saw Lion King at the Kennedy Center. Absolutely no desire to see any other Disney musical.
Looks like options are (that are appropriate for a 10 year old): Little Shop of Horrors (I’ve seen before) &Juliet Six Maybe Happy Ending MJ Urinetown I think Gypsy is a no go… and then obviously no Book of Mormon (which I’ve seen) or Cabaret for her. Maybe Hamilton but I don’t have a desire to see it again. What show or two shows would you recommend for us? |
I took my 10yo to see &Juliet last year and she liked it. |
She will love Six. |
I really enjoyed Maybe Happy Ending. It's a smaller musical, with a cast of just four, but it's very beautiful and has some incredible set pieces.
&Juliet isn't a game changer but it is great silly fun. Six is a concert style musical and also fun. I will say I think you can get a similar experience on tour. MJ I believe is mostly a dance musical but I haven't seen it. Urinetown I saw a regional production ages ago. It's a bit weird but a kid might get a kick out of the pee humor. If it was me picking for myself, I'd see Maybe Happy Ending again. |
My 6 and 10 year old loved MJ. It won Tony’s for a reason. I’d totally see it again! |
My kids loved Six! |
Ditto Six, really fun show |
My 8yo and I both loved &Juliet. You should definitely see it if you liked the music in the show (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, etc). Really fun. We're seeing Six next week - lots of her friends have seen it and loved it. |
&Juliet and Outsiders |
Took my DD to see MJ when she was in 4th grade loved it (and so did DH and I). |
I loved Six, but DS did not. I think a 10 year old girl would prefer &Juliet. |
My 8 and 11 year old girls loved & Juliet. |
My 10 year old DD LOVED Six, won’t turn the soundtrack off. Also liked &Juliet a lot. She is a huge Hamilton fan and also really enjoyed The Wiz. |
Urinetown!!!!
The show is great, the cast is amazing and the entire experience of going to City Center Encores is like catching lightening in a bottle! You are lucky your trip to NYC coincides with one of their productions. (Maybe also go see Maybe Happy Endings) |
I know you said no more Disney but we took 7, 9, and 11 year old to Aladdin last year and we all LOVED it. We will see Lion King this year- absolutely nothing can compare to NYC Broadway, so also worth seeing a show you’ve already seen if you haven’t seen it in New York yet.
That said, if you and your DD are into dark humor and a little bit horror, little shop is always a good bet. |
