| What the title says - DC had a 260 in MAP-M Spring '24 in 5th. Then the same 260 for Fall '24. Now just 261 for Winter '24. DC is in an AIM class in 6th but said they found it easy while rest of classmates struggled. But now I wonder if DC is taking it too easy and not working hard enough? DC said there were questions about functions and circumference that they struggled with. What can DC do to improve? DC does IXL. |
| How did you get Winter MAP-M scores? I haven't gotten mine and looked at last year and I didn't get the Winter MAP-M scores until Feb. |
DC saw the score at the end of the test and told me. I always tell my kids to note it down after the test is completed. |
|
We are in a similar boat. DC had 260 at end of 5th grade in compacted, dropped into mid 240s for fall of 6th, and barely went up a few points for winter map (still in 240s). Also in AIM.
Our AIM class has a long term sub so the kids are basically teaching themselves. My kid also does IXL and khan academy, always a strong math kid. Not sure what's going on? |
Ah ok. Your kids are good for doing that! |
I know people say that kids can level up their skills and improve with IXL and Khan Academy, but I have yet to see evidence of either my kids being capable of this. It just becomes another power struggle with them, as they hate doing it, and when they do it, get stuck and get confused and don't know what to do and hate doing IXL/Khan even more. |
In my DC's case I think its because the teacher has no choice but to go slow since many kids are struggling in AIM. DC was saying they were bored but I didn't realize how it would impact scores during testing. Looks like DC didn't care anymore and took it too easy and this is the result. If DC was in the right class to begin with at least DC would have worked harder. From what I understand MAP scores are key to magnet placements in 8th and I am upset - just not sure with whom - DC for not even trying anymore, or myself, for not being on top of this. |
No need to be upset with either. There is plenty of time to improve till 8th grade MAP. Btw, are you sure your DC took the same version of MAP in both 5th and 6th grade? This year, 5/6 5th graders are taking the "big kid" math MAP. I am not sure if this was the case last year. |
| Yes they took the "big kid" version in compacted last year too. |
DC said it was a 6+ MAP?? Is that the same one they take in compacted Math? |
| OP again - Do all kids regardless of advanced placement take the same MAP-M in 6th grade? Or does it vary depending on what track they are on - regular, AMP, AIM? |
260? Your kid is ready for algebra. Congrats! Unless your kid studies algebra and geometry outside of AIM pre-algebra class, their score won't keep increasing. Assign your own homework on Khan, IXL, or AoP/Alcumus |
| 260 is 99th percentile for 6th, so you are stressing over nothing. |
Your kid isn't a math fan, and that's OK. |
All kids in all grades take the same MAP test. There is only one test. The only difference is at what point in the range of questions / difficulty the student starts at. The student starts at the exact point where they ended their test the previous time. |
