My husband and I are going to Vancouver for a week-long spring break (mid-April this year). We will be staying at the Holiday Inn in West End and will rent a car for half of the days and rent bikes for the other half. We love active vacations and plan to go to Capilano Park, Grouse Mountain, the Aquarium, Granville Island, Queen Elizabeth Park, Stanley Park, and the MOA. I know the weather will likely be cold and grey, but that will not bother us too much.
I would love any other recommendations from past visitors (or residents). Places to eat (we like cheap eats!)? Hikes to try (within a 30/45-min drive)? Things to see? Shows to watch? Tours to take? |
Did this with a friend years ago...the only thing I remember is that the tourist hop on/hop off bus was completely useless. But you'll have bikes/a car. I'd just do a bike tour. |
I haven't been to Vancouver before, but I hope to sometime soon. They mentioned taking a food tour that was very entertaining and included some stops at various street art spots (murals, giant silos, etc). Maybe add that to the list? |
We were there end of March and hit amazing cherry blossoms which are scattered through the city, so stop everything and pivot to the blossoms if they are still going when you're there!
There are some cool Japanese department stores we had never seen before which were unique. Hint: find Jarvis, the robot barista at Muji. Walk all along the sea wall Thought gas town was scuzzy and not worth walking past the famous steam clock. Yale town has some atty, cute blocks. It's a fun little boat ride to Granville island. |
We also enjoyed riding the ferry to Granville Island. It's about a half mile to the dock from your hotel. There are a bunch of hikes close by... try Trudi's Trail. |
I recommend taking the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale and back. You can park your car in Horseshoe Bay on a surface lot and walk onto the ferry. You have to get off the ferry in Langdale but you can turn around and get right back on (the return is free). The ferry ride is about 50 minutes long each way and takes you through some magnificent scenery. There are good places to eat on the water in Horseshoe Bay which is also really pretty. |
Might be a little further than you were intending to go, but we did a day trip to Whistler. Lots of fun. It was summer, so maybe a different vibe than April. The drive was really pretty. |
I remember the Chinese garden being pretty. |
Highly recommend Phnom Penh which is a Vietnamese-Cambodian restaurant. |
You should try one of the seaplane tours. They look cool to me. Or just go to the waterfront to watch them take off and land? |
OP here. Thanks very much for all of the recommendations so far. Any other fun experiences to share? Good places to eat? |
I don't think Vancouver in the spring is a very popular destination. Hope it is fun enough! |
