Professor opinion on UChicago Financial Crisis

Brutal take down of uchicago. Seems to really have dampened in quality even if its rankings don’t suggest such.

Just finished reading- this is fascinating and shows how these budgets have had real impact on professor quality and the facilities of the institution!

It’s shocking to me that the University of Chicago is funding new laboratory facilities etc by borrowing and there seems to have been no discussion re: raising any of the shortfall from alumni donations..

It does seem that some schools just don’t have much of a culture of alumni giving, and that is a relevant factor to look at when evaluating the financial health of a school (vs. just looking at endowment).

What...all those econ grads are stingy?

This is what happens when you force students to commit by pushing them to apply ED2 etc. They will always remain grumpy alumni 😁

This is what confuses me. Chicago graduates people who make a ton of money- astrophysicists who became data scientists, math majors that go into quant finance, Econ and business majors that go into IB and PE, public policy leaders, etc. What in the world is going on with whoever is directing alumni relations?

Go ahead and say that DCUM members paid the professor to write that article.

Better to be hated than to be talked about contemptuously. See any thread that talks about GMU, JMU, VCU on this forum. People are bullies when it comes to schools they don't think are "good enough".

This isn’t a hate post. This is a discussion that is encouraged from a professor at the university. Maybe get over yourself a little?

For those boasting of U Chicago as superior to U Penn, contrast how Penn runs operating surpluses and Chicago large operating deficits

They should never have dumped the football team. Big mistake.

Who ever says Chicago is superior to Penn is daydreaming. I have a kid headed to Chicago, but he would have taken a spot at Penn in a heartbeat. (Am dismayed to learn about the shaky finances, fingers crossed it won't have much impact).

Make sure he can get in those classes with professors, not instructors!
